Mathematics is important in our everyday life. It equips us with the skills we need to interpret and analyse information, simplify and solve problems, assess risk and make informed decisions. It is necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. Mathematical and Numeracy skills builds mental discipline and encourages logical reasoning, thus playing a crucial role in understanding content of other school subjects such as Technology, Science, the Humanities, and the Arts.

 

Year 7, 8 & 9

All Year 7, 8 and 9 students engage with all elements of the Victorian curriculum. They study 3 strands: ‘Number and Algebra’, ‘Measurement and Geometry’ and ‘Statistics and Probability’. The Year 7 to 9 courses aims to expose students to a range of mathematical concepts. It focuses on developing fluency with basic and more complex skills, logical reasoning and problem solving skills.

Classes provide a differentiated curriculum. Students are encouraged to focus on striving to improve and build on the knowledge they have already acquired. In addition to class time, all students have access to:

• Maths Club – an after school Maths help weekly session supervised by Maths teachers
• Chess Club – a group of interested students who meet at lunchtimes or after school
• ICAS Maths Competitions – a competition that provides a real challenge for highly able students

Senior School

Core	Elective
Year 10 Compulsory choice of Yr10 Mathematical Methods Yr10 General Mathematics Yr10 Foundation Mathematics	Units 1 and 2 VCE Maths is an option for selected students.
VCE – Year 11 Students will be able to choose from the following electives:	Units 1 and 2 Specialist Maths Units 1 and 2 Mathematical Methods Units 1 and 2 General Mathematics Units 1 and 2 Foundation Maths   *Selected students will also be able to complete a Unit 3 and 4 Maths subject.
VCE – Year 12 Students will be able to choose from the following electives:	Units 3 and 4 Specialist Maths Units 3 and 4 Mathematical Methods Units 3 and 4 Further Mathematics Students can study all 3 subjects, although only 2 will used as the ‘top 4’ subjects for ATAR calculations. The third will count for 10%.
VCAL VCAL students will complete VCAL Numeracy as a part of their program
